To stop smoking is the single most important thing a smoker can do to improve their health. To never smoke is one of the most important things a non-smoker can do to maintain their health. Yet, over 45 million people in the U.S. alone still smoke. People use excuses like stress and coolness to justify their choice to start or continue smoking. But there is no reason that justify destroying your own lungs, and many people will suffer in the future because of their decision to smoke. Even those who say they only smoke a little, or only socially, are putting themselves at risk.

Shawne Merriman will go through with season ending surgery after trying to play through a knee injury. What did he expect? Doctors repeatedly told him that not only was his season at risk, but his career was put at risk by attempting to play with such an injury. Then he comes out, plays, and says he didn’t feel right. Did he expect to be Super Man? Not playing is certain to make him unhappy, but dealing with the injury is the best option he has. The San Diego Chargers will survive without him in a conference that is becoming less and less of a powerhouse. The teams should remain competitive for the division with the Denver Broncos, and at least achieve a wild card spot. And in the playoffs anything can happen…

Through recent reading, the importance of eating tomatoes in their ‘natural’ form has been undermined. As the major source of Lycopene, known to decrease the risk of prostate cancer, tomatoes are promoted as absolutely necessary in the diet of men. However, it seems that tomato paste, such as that used on pizzas, has about four times the amount of Lycopene available for absorption by the body. Apparently, lycopene in the ‘natural’ tomato does not have good bio-availability, meaning that it is there but the body cannot readily use it. However, once cooked, the bio-availability of tomatoes increases dramatically. The tomato is a good source of a number of other vitamins & minerals, but those can also be acquired in other foods.
